List of mobile phone number series by country

In many countries, mobile phones are assigned dedicated mobile phone codes within the country's telephone numbering plan. Some countries that do not use area codes (e.g. Singapore) allocate specific number ranges to mobile phones that are easily distinguishable from landlines. One notable exception to this type of assignment is the countries within the North American Numbering Plan (the United States and its territories, Canada, and much of the Caribbean), in which mobile phones are assigned subscriber numbers within geographic area codes, and are not easily distinguishable from landlines.

Many people, especially in the North American Numbering Plan (NANP), are not aware of the fact that calls to international mobile numbers are usually charged a much higher rate compared to calls to regular landline telephone numbers. For example: a popular international calling provider lists the following rates for calls from the United States to the United Kingdom: 2.5 cents/min for calls to UK landlines, and 19.3 cents/min for calls to all UK mobile subscribers.

Basically there are two types of numbering plans in connection with this issue:

The main difference between the two types of telephone plans is the "calling party pays" mobile network found in countries using the latter. In other words, the person being called wouldn't be charged for receiving calls on his mobile phone. The calling person pays a higher rate than when calling a landline number.

International prefixes table

The following table was originally compiled semi-automatically from the List of country calling codes. It has proven useful in creating an Asterisk PBX facility to warn a caller is about to dial an expensive foreign mobile.

Also, it's very useful to compile a Least-cost routing table for Asterisk PBX which permit to route calls to the cheaper telephony provider. Using the table below with the script inside the LCDial Asterisk application, it's possible to convert tables with the call rate by country (i.e. France: 0.01€/min, France mobile: 0.07€/min) into a table with the call rate by prefix (i.e. 0033: 0.01€/min, 00336: 0.07€/min).

The NSN data for each number range is urgently needed. The NSN, or National Significant Number, can be defined in two equivalent ways:

  • It is the number of digits dialled by a caller from abroad NOT including the country code or any extension.
  • It is also the number of digits dialled by a caller within the same country but NOT including any "trunk" code, such as the leading "1" in the US or leading "0" in most of the rest of the world, and not including any extension.
Simple examples:
  • the German international number +49 5432 34545 has an NSN length of 9 (the +49 country code is not included),
  • the US national number 1-707-555-2222 has an NSN length of 10 (the leading 1 is not included),
  • the Italian international number +39 055 455 3456 has an NSN length of 10 (the +39 country code is not included),
  • the Chinese national number (034) 3456 2345 has an NSN length of 10 (the 0 trunk code is not included), and
  • the Latvian international number +371 4455 6677 has an NSN length of 8 (the +371 country code is not included and there is no area code).
